Julia Jokiaho is a Research Associate in the Cities, Communities, and Consumption Team at SEI Headquarters in Stockholm. Her research addresses sustainable consumption and environmental governance, with particular attention to the role of policy and governance innovations in mitigating the environmental pressures of consumption. Central to her work is the concept of sufficiency and the pursuit of strategies to achieve absolute reductions in consumption levels as a necessary pathway toward sustainability.
She has contributed to research on pathways for sustainable consumption within the circular economy, examining in particular the role of households and lifestyles in shaping environmental outcomes. Her previous work includes analyses of extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes to address marine litter and resource efficiency, as well as comparative policy research on circular economy developments in Latin American countries. This diverse set of experiences underpins her interest in cross-contextual analysis of how sustainability policies are designed and implemented.
At APCER & Hotspot 2025, Jokiaho will present insights from SEI’s research on consumption-based emissions in the EU, drawing on empirical findings and ongoing policy debates, as well as national case studies that illustrate emerging governance approaches.
